English isn't even the official language of the United States

we don't have an official language.

Various states have official languages (19 states + DC don't have any official language); of these states, English is indeed official, with a few states also recognizing native languages as official alongside English.

Of course that's beside the point, as even calling this sort of racism "thinly veiled" would be far too charitable.

That's how I started using Linux

big book with CD, I think it was "RedHat Linux Secrets 5.4" or something. 2.0 or 2.2 kernel.

Honestly, it was fantastic. And almost all of it is still relevant today. (Some of the stuff on xfree86 and the chap/pap stuff not so much.)

But it gave a really solid (IMHO) intro to a Linux/*NIX system, a solid overview of coreutils, etc. And while LILO has been long replaced, and afaik /sys didn't exist at the time, it formed a good foundation.

I'll refrain from commenting on any init system changes that have taken place since then.

I think they mean just the domain name, but not positive.

That's unfortunately not really a contradiction though, given the electoral college

I think Harris will obliterate Trump in the popular, but that's sadly not what matters.

When I visited Alaska, they said you should always take the sights off your rifle. That way it doesn't hurt as much when the grizzly shoves it up your ass.

Yeah, something this big is absolutely not one engineer's fault. Even if that engineer maliciously pushed an update, it's not their fault

it was a complete failure of the organization, and one person having the ability to wreck havoc like this is the failure.

And I actually have some amount of hope that, in this case, it is being recognized as such.

Only real USPS drama I've had was when package shipped to me was seized for counterfeit postage.

Seller claimed they were talking with USPS and would work it out. USPS disagreed. Got my refund in the end.

"It's more performant than the old SODIMM sticks, vastly more efficient, it saves space, and it should even help with thermals as well. All that, and it's still about as repairable as anything we've ever seen," iFixit concluded.

Yes, there was a perfectly fine, upgradable memory standard before. And many 486s were also perfectly fine, upgradable computers.

The fact that a new technology makes it so we can have our cake and eat it too

upgradability without any compromise

is a fantastic innovation.

Some false premises in this thread

corporations are not required to maximize profits. Even if maximizing profit was mandatory, this is a pretty subjective topic

is short term profit while pissing off your customers "maximizing profit," or is sacrificing short term gains for long term customer loyalty "maximizing profit"? It's not a rhetorical question, and I think you can find examples of both.

Corporations are also not all pursuing endless growth; in addition to "growth stocks" there are "dividend stocks." Some companies aren't aggressively pursuing growth, but are making profit, and the stock reflects this. It feels almost antiquated in the "to the moon" era, but these companies do exist.

The bags for produce where I am are largely compostable now, which is a start.

It really grinds my gears that the fake meat products are often in single-use plastic. It kinda takes away from the whole "better for the environment" aspect. I'd gladly take fake meat wrapped in butcher paper or similar.
