I'm too lazy to insert the "look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power" meme here, so.... Please imagine it instead.

I'm switching jobs in a couple of months, and I am SO glad to be leaving a (very well maintained!!) python codebase with type hints and mypy for a rust codebase.

It is just not the same.

Now judge it by how good the end result looks

But also.... The fuck?

A begruntled Culture citizen entasked with a seemingly straight-forward matter in a coincidentally-very-earth-like civ where capitalism reigns supreme in all the worst ways. A society on the brink of collapse due to leapfrogging technological advancements while ignoring, and possibly suppressing, the societal changes this necessitates, benefitting only those already in power. Not-entirely-clear motivations of unseen Culture Minds, presumably plotting beyond what is apparent to our protagonist. Getting to re-evaluate this strange society by experiencing first its thrills, then slowly but surely its horrors through the eyes of that protagonist, whose view of the world and themselves can never be the same afterwards.

All the while, a member of this fledgling society, finding themselves aboard the Culture vessel "I'm sorry, I thought there was still money on that card; here, try this one", a state-of-the-art ~~warship~~nope we don't do those, a state-of-the-art Very Fast Picket, earth-bound with engines pushing their limits, is motivated by the fleeting hope of maybe, just maybe, getting there in time to share a crucial piece of information with the protagonist, but - oh, too late. This storyline lead nowhere, and you are still glad to have read it, for the possibly best parts of the book where the witty ship-banter that had you laughing with tears.

Oh we also end the book with the cold-blooded murder of a ~~Bezos~~Musk look-alike at the hands of SC, and thanks to the book you are left with the clear impression that in the grand schemes of things, this was not simply necessary, it was just.

....something like that?

No way!! You're the goat. I spent the day trying to get behind how the cracking worked by making simple examples, and you just... Solve the puzzle :D

Awesoms, thank you so much!! I'll appreciate update this thread if this leads to something :D

It's ancient, but in a way I respect Nvidia for not milking it by releasing a new version every year.

Its still a perfect decive. Fast, streams absolutely everything, amazing remote. I seriously don't know what I would want from a new version

That idea is just as ridiculous.

(Preface: almost all of this is handled in a single Nix config, and no docker in use at all)

At home, in a two-hosts Proxmox cluster:

  • blocky for adblocking
  • a full *arr stack with torrents and nzbs for uuuuuuhhh Linux ISOs
  • Jellyfin so friends and family can watch, I mean use the Linux ISOs
  • Paperless (HIGHLY recommend)
  • Wastebin (Pastebin alternative)
  • Sterling-PDF (also really recommend, allowed me to get rid of Acrobat Reader for filling out and signing PDFs, plus a bunch more)
  • Homeassistant
  • Linux and Windows clients available for whenever you might need them (not often, but can come in handy)
  • Borg client, backing up parts of my NAS to a cloud storage box
  • OPNSense backup for the hardware firewall
  • Forgejo

On a bare metal machine at a reputable cloud provider:

  • my personal Email, Calendar, Contacts (super easy with Nix)
  • another blocky instance
  • another borg client
  • Rustdesk server (OSS Teamviewer)
  • wireguard that's just used by my TV so crunchyroll thinks it's in (other country), Lmao

Wishlist:

  • Vaultwarden
  • Immich, once added to nixpkgs
  • PeerTube
  • Pixelfed

Ah, good news in regards to gaming, esp. Steam gaming!

Steam invested quite a bit of energy into "Proton", essentially a new kind of compatibility layer. If you remember tinkering around with wine and winetricks from years ago, that's basically gone nowadays.

For most games, just go into the Steam settings for that game, and under "Compatibility", check the box.

Then click download, and play. That's it for most games 🎉

Also check out protondb.com - it's basically a community-sourced database cataloging how well Steam games work on Linux.

Good luck on your Linux journey, and feel free to ask questions if something comes up! :)
