cool can you point me at the repo for their server software then? and the f-droid reproducible build of their android app, or the sideloadable iOS app?

"the problem is the institution, not the people actively participating in the institution in exchange for money and power" what

[-] triplenadir@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 4 months ago

to me "pedantic" means that a difference doesn't matter, and in this case I think it matters a lot.

"chemical" / "non chemical" (and "natural" / "artificial") are marketing terms with no agreed-upon meaning and I think the world would be better if we stopped using them - because they overshadow terms which have clearer meanings like "safe" and "healthy".

in your strawberry example I'd say the useful metrics are the usual nutrient contents, and if any of the ingredients are known to cause health problems. "% strawberries" would be an objective metric that personally seems kinda meaningless to me personally but at least wouldn't be misleading.

I totally agree that urban sprawl sucks, and should be stopped. a much more direct and fair way to do this would be to remove zoning restrictions that only allow building single family homes (instead of any higher-density housing) in most urban parts of north america, and remove minimum parking requirements for businesses – and hope that the cultural shift propagates to other places where these car-dependent designs have taken hold.

secondly, calling people needing transport a "market" seems like part of the same faulty thinking where public services need to turn a profit. taxing the rich could absolutely pay for a lot more public transport: before the Beeching cuts in the 1960s, the UK had around twice as many passenger railway lines – this was also at a time when the top rate of income tax there was 83%, as opposed to 45% now.

lastly, maybe think about who rich people exploited in order to get their (your?) money before proposing policies that explicitly aim to make poor people poorer, while letting the rich continue to live where they (you?) please

thanks for the polite and thoughtful response 💖

I'm sure in the scheme of the world's problems it's a small thing, but I really think it'll be easier to find stable housing for everyone who wants it if we can stop seeing it as primarily a marketable possession 🙏

how is "property" any more generic than "home" or "dwelling"? and do you not see any additional meanings, beyond "place to live", highlighted in calling it "property"?

Have you ever tried to move a cello on a bike? It fucking sucks, and I’m absolutely not going to take my most prized instrument for a bike ride in the rain.

honestly, i haven't.

but i've moved heavier and more fragile shit in a bike trailer, and 2 minutes of internetting located this cellist who toured with not only her instrument, but entire-ass gig setup, by bike: https://can.org.nz/article/cyclist-musician-to-tour-with-cello-and-recycled-solar-powered-electric-assist-bicycle-trail

either way, a comically large musical instrument (which let's be real, those of us with a vision for a post-car future would probably still sign off on as "sure I guess an occasional van is fine for this") doesn't address the nonsense take that private car ownership, and widespread car-centric public space, is a core part of, or even compatible with, "individual autonomy". you've been lied to, and you're now doing free PR work for an industry that's poisoning our lungs, killing our friends and family (especially older and younger people), and torching the planet.

brb making some "bike-humper" stickers.

all 3 of the suggestions work as all those parts of speech ("how do I bedazzle my desktop", "check out my bedazzle").

If English is your second language then fair enough, otherwise wow what a skill issue

we are very screwed, in large part because of people like you, enthusiastically volunteering to help with propaganda in support of corporate real estate and retail tycoons.

you could be part of the solution by wearing a mask.

perhaps research the effects of repeated COVID infections on otherwise-fine people, reconsider how transmission and probability works ("oh, there's no point using condoms, anyone I have any kind of sex with is likely to get HIV from someone else"), and try and imagine how you'd feel if you or someone you care about had an immune system disorder and couldn't safely go outside in your area because of healthier people who prioritise their comfort in not wearing a small piece of cloth on their faces

weird mispelling of "developers and initial server admins have actual prosocial politics instead of standard tech libertarian nonsense, setting the stage for effective moderation"

(defederation wouldn't have helped much if Lemmy was full of Nazi chuds when the reddit migration happened)

"Remember me" functionality doesn't require a cookie banner:

The commonly seen method of using a checkbox and a simple information note such as “remember me (uses cookies)” next to the submit form would be an appropriate means of gaining consent
