While news reports and testimonies have emerged of the torture of Palestinian prisoners held in detention camps like Sde Teiman—where there are frequent beatings, starvation, forced stress positions, rape, and death—there has been less recognition that these conditions are prevalent across all Israeli prisons and detention centers. There are 19 carceral facilities in Israel, and Ofer Prison, which operates in the West Bank.

“The first thing [the Israeli Prison Services] began to do was to fully isolate detainees,” Jaghoub said. After October 7th, isolation of detainees was not limited to solitary confinement, but included cutting prisoners off from any communication with family, lawyers, or the outside world, including stripping them of radio, television, and access to phone calls.

“One of the worst things of the isolation practices was even cutting us off from time. The confiscation of watches meant we are completely and fully cut off from the world entirely—that we were denied any piece of information, even knowing what time it,” Jaghoub told Drop Site.

The isolation of detainees cut the world off from detainees, rendering them invisible and allowing Israel to continue its practices against them without challenge. Only when prisoners were released could they fully reveal the degree of abuse inside, though some did manage to communicate from their prison cells.

Now, if the GHF’s Gaza debut is any indication, the militarised distribution of food will continue to provide opportunities for mass killing as crowds of starving Palestinians gather around aid hubs. The phrase “shooting fish in a barrel” comes to mind – as if the Gaza Strip weren’t enough of a barrel already.

To be sure, the idea of luring starving people to specific geographical points to facilitate Israel’s genocidal conquest is singularly diabolical. And as the US persists in enabling Israel’s fish-in-a-barrel approach, any remotely moral world would refuse to stomach the arrangement any longer.

Eyewitnesses have filmed Israeli military excavators in northern Gaza demolishing the Noura Al-Kaabi Dialysis Centre – the only specialised dialysis facility in Gaza. It’s the latest facility Israel has destroyed or blocked off as it forces Gaza’s population to the south.

Israel says its settlement expansion is to “prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state” as it announced 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian lawyer Diana Buttu says Israeli officials are daring the world to stop them.

Israeli settlers kidnapped and tortured two Palestinian-American brothers from the village of Burqa near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, the Wafa official Palestinian news agency reports.

Ghassan and Imad Jaber were visiting relatives in al-Mughayyir village when the Israeli settlers started assaulting them, al-Mughayyir mayor Sayel Canaan told Arabic media. The brothers were later released and evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The Israeli couple found the Family Hotel Agoncev on booking.com and arrived last Monday. For most of the stay, the two didn’t see anyone at reception except one man on the first day who gave them the code to the hotel and their room.

“When we went to breakfast, we said there was no toilet paper, and they said they would sort it. We then left for the whole day, and when we came back that evening, there was still no toilet paper. There was no one at reception, but they had left a phone number, so we called and called and called. My husband sent a message.”

The next day, the couple left the hotel. On returning to Israel, Michael-Gayego’s husband saw the WhatsApp response:

'Not because we are Jews, because we are Israeli'

Since the incident, she and her husband have contacted booking.com – “We don’t want to give money to these kinds of people” – but have had no response. They also contacted the Bulgarian embassy in Israel and the Sofia police but have not heard from either.

"As part of the agreement, Hamas has agreed to release 10 living Israeli captives and the remains of 18 others, in exchange for a number of Palestinian prisoners to be agreed upon.

However, the group proposed that the releases be carried out in phases: four living captives would be freed on day one, two on day 30, and the final four on day 60. The remains of Israeli captives would also be returned in stages - six on day 10, another six on day 30, and the final six on day 50."

"Following October 7, 2023, prisoners’ conditions inside Israeli detention centers have rapidly deteriorated. The last 19 months have seen a dramatic escalation in the number of Palestinians behind bars, alongside increasing prisoner abuse and mistreatment by Israeli authorities.

There are currently more than 10,100 Palestinians held in Israeli detention, according to the prisoner rights group Addameer. This is nearly double the number from before October 7. That figure does not include detainees from Gaza held in detention camps run by the Israeli military. Some 3,500 people are held in administrative detention, including 119 children."
