The developers behind Lemmy have spoken up about the current situation regarding migrating users and the effect on their development process.

Two most important points from this imo:

  • don't hammer them with pull requests, duplicate Git issues or questions because they got enough of those
  • if you want things to move faster, give them money! They are focusing on user feedback and therefore don't have enough time to make a lot of money.

A fellow mod informed me that about it as I was laying in bed. Reddit sent a message to the mod team and after 1 hour demoded me. I didn't even had time to see it, never-mind respond to it.

Looks like we rattled reddit enough to start shooting. There goes all that fancy talk about our protest not affecting them much.

Just FYI for now. It's late here so I'll see how we proceed tomorrow.

Coming from reddit of course, I cannot figure out how to get to some of the communities I followed there. Either they don't exist or I'm doing something wrong. Like I frequent r/android and r/SquaredCircle, r/movies, r/gaming, r/fossdroid just to name a few. Is there something similar here? Thank you!!

Right now on lemmy.world, but it happens in others as well. Is there a fix?

Following the announcement by beehaw admins to defederate from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works, there has been many posts and messages regarding that decisions and what other instances will do.

I personally believe Lemmy/kbin can only thrive if there is a free flow of content between different instances, with instance admins taking a back seat and focusing more on the infrastructure and making sure the technical bugs are smoothened out. Community mods can moderate their communities, and users can block the communities they don't find appealing (there's even a toggle in settings to hide every NSFW post from your feed altogether).

We don't want to create walled gardens, nor do we want to make Lemmy more confusing than it already is for new users. We will not be defederating from any instance if there is even one good community on it that our instance users might find useful. So far we have only blocked lemmygrad.ml, and right now we have no plans to block anyone else.

Does being in a previous version cause issues such us being unable to search for other communities in instances in a higher version?

Someone has started a community curated list of subreddits that have made a Lemmy or Kbin Instance.

This will help people discover their niche commuities while also preventing fragmentation.

I'm logged in on my PC, but apparently my password didn't save to the password manager, and forgot password isn't doing anything, so I don't have a way to reset it. This a known issue?

What should I add to my 'watch soon' list?

How do you scrape stuff, I tried wget but it didn't work. A login + a button press is required to see anything. I can do this manually if required. There are many different slides and videos though.

I don't know if this breaks etiquette or something, but if you want other instances to be able to see the community you created here you can go to their page and search for your community from their server !community@lemmy.fmhy.ml

That will 'cache' it for them, and if someone searches for a related keyword it will show up.

Maybe something that is not understood by new lemmings, at least me, is that when we join communities in other instances we may find ourselves blocked from accessing them (without creating another account) in the future.

A reasonable PSA seems to be to keep in mind the 'philosophy' of other instances before joining general interest communities such as News, Technology, Gaming, etc...

As posted by @maltfield@lemmy.ml at https://lemmy.ml/post/1243402 , there are some instances that seem to have an easy trigger when blocking others:

Beehaw 387 TagPro.lol 384 lemmy.techstache 384 lib.lgbt 382 tchncs 69 Pawb.Social 67 Divisions by zero 54 Feddit 47 Feddit.dk 47 Feddit.nu 47 Lemmygrad 42 Leddit Social 42 clatter 41 lemmy.game-files.net 41 oceanbreeze.earth 39 Clueware's lemmy 39 MRM 38 SS14 Lemmy 25

Who blocks FMHY (lemmy.fmhy.ml)

Can we see somewhere what instances block us?

Now that Kbin and lemmy can see and interact with each other I have been going to different magazines and subscribing to them in hopes they will appear in ALL for everyone, is that how it works or will those not be visible to anyone on our instance?

The error is: SyntaxError: Unexpected token 'R', "Request er"... is not valid JSON A smaller image, or different format, doesn't make a difference. Not sure what to do. I tried with a 1536x2816 png, 3.93 mb; jpg version, 676 kb; and a 384x704 png version, 477 kb.

Export reddit posts? (lemmy.fmhy.ml)

Probably illegal, but in all of this talk of "reddit has historic posts that are important", could we export all of the posts from r/FMHY and import them here?

Technically, we could scrape them at least. Legally dubious. But perhaps if there attribution to reddit for those imported posts it could be fine?

Is there a federation issue with sopuli.xyz?

Been trying on and off for about a day and still can't get the above community to show up. Tried with and without exclamation.

Any tips?

Not sure when the site went down, but I only noticed now. I tried to do my research to get more information but with the migration from reddit to lemmy all my usual sources are scattered.

Does anyone else have any more details on this?

Edit: For anyone looking for alternatives, please visit the megathread here: https://fmhy.pages.dev

So if I understand this right, you pick a server and your server account can post on that server and any servers that that server federates with.

So what happens to your account if the server you joined goes down? Yes, you could always create a new account somewhere else, but you lose all your followed communities and post and comment histories as well.
