Syrians said Israeli forces are within 25km of the capital Damascus, though they have denied they left the occupied Golan Heights.

Two regional security sources and one Syrian security source told Reuters on Tuesday that Israeli military forces reached the town of Qatana, located 10km into Syrian territory, east of the demilitarised zone that separates the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights from Syria.

Israel has moved to take advantage of the Sunday overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad and has been launching air strikes across Syria in what it says is an attempt to prevent advanced weaponry falling into the wrong hands.

Damascus is Hamascus or something? What's the rationale this time? Because the disengagement agreement might not be enforced, Syria is free real estate?

[-] Sundial@lemm.ee 17 points 2 weeks ago

The rational is the old agreement to respect rhe borders is null and void due to the coup by the rebels. Syria is a stateless nation in their eyes and they see it as free real estate, just like you said.

Factually Israel was occupying Golan before the agreement. They do not have any legal claim to occupy Golan outside of the agreement. Their logic makes no sense in any way.

Israel:

What's that? There's people living there? We should ask them? What the fuck are you on about?

The talking point this time around seems to be that they are just destroying those chemical gas weapons and military infrastructure. Can't have that with Islamists. I have seen one person call this "forward defending" unironically.

Like the invasions and occupations of Poland and Czechoslovakia were "forward defences" of Nazi Germany, of course.
