What…. This is on par with any kind of internet discourse. It’s pretty much why I hardly ever post prior to Lemmy. It doesn’t matter how well articulated the post, SOMEONE will find the need to correct or clarify unnecessarily.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 6 points 20 hours ago

it’s really sad because i take great pride and pleasure from reading other people’s thoughts and posts. but when i try to give back, it’s immediately jumped on by dogpilers and “oh you actually meant something else…” people. and when i do the bare minimum to defend myself, they slap back with the “okay buddy, sure” and downvote my defense so it’s invisible to other readers.

needless to say my blocklist is nearing 100 users.

and downvote my defense so it’s invisible to other readers.

Lemmy isn't an endless torrent of comments. Even downvoted ones get reached.

Wanna get mad? Yesterday drag made a similar post criticising Lemmy, but it focused on the transphobia on the platform. -46 downvotes. Thread full of transphobia anyway. On Blahaj. https://lemmy.nz/post/17415487

hmm i honestly just don’t understand what the post is trying to say. it’s a bit unclear to me but im sorry there was confusion and hard feelings going on

[-] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz 0 points 13 hours ago

Anyone who thinks pretending to be trans is an effective troll hates trans people.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 13 hours ago

see i agree with that statement when written out like that. the post doesn’t really do anything to get me to that notion on its own though.

[-] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz 0 points 12 hours ago

Hm. Maybe it was too subtle? Cunk is explaining why "trolls pretending to be trans" is supposed to be a problem on Lemmy, using her usual brand of accidentally telling it like it is. Lemmy only has a "troll problem" because Lemmy users hate trans people. No trans hate, no troll problem. If everyone respected trans people, nobody would be getting called a troll. If anyone actually tried to troll that way, they'd be met with acceptance and have no power.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 12 hours ago

hmmm try workshopping different ways to express this thought, i’m quite lost sorry :(

[-] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz -1 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

All drag's friends on Discord understood the joke on their first read. Drag isn't sure where the misunderstanding is. We're currently in a voice call trying to figure out why anyone doesn't understand this one. Drag's friend suggested maybe you don't think Lemmy is full of transphobes, but drag thinks you do, since you've said Lemmy is very misogynistic, and those two things go together. Maybe you didn't understand that Cunk is supposed to be wrong about the trolls actually existing but right about what the problem the users have is?

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 2 points 11 hours ago

oh okay i get it now. it’s… dense. i usually understand the more complex memes but this one is impenetrable to me. i’m not surprised others had a bad time.

[-] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz 0 points 11 hours ago

Out of curiosity, have you ever watched a Philomena Cunk show? Drag is wondering if that's part of what makes the difference

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 11 hours ago

i have seen and love her show

[-] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz -1 points 11 hours ago

Bizarre. Are you used to seeing versions of the format where Philomena is 100% right? Drag has seen plenty of memes that do that, and drag thinks they misunderstand the format.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 10 hours ago

no i know the format well

i think the issue is the second panel is asking the audience to infer what the opposite or opposing conclusion the author intends us to come to. and with the text given… it’s not obvious.

generally, it’s not rhetorically effective to place the thesis of a work behind a distortion. a lot of the confusion i see in those comments is just struggling to figure out what the authorial intent is because it’s A) not “common knowledge” and B) deeply obfuscated by the Cunk format.

[-] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz -1 points 10 hours ago

Hm. Drag thought the thesis was presented clearly in the last line. "Lemmy users are upset because they hate trans people". Cunk starts off by agreeing with the dominant Lemmy view that the site is full of trolls, and then flips the script by telling the truth. Cunk starts off on the reader's level, sharing their false assumptions, and then unexpectedly tells a truth the reader doesn't know. That's how drag understands effective communication to work, start from the reader's knowledge and then tell them something they don't know. Perhaps there are nuances to the format of communication that drag doesn't understand.

[-] spujb@lemmy.cafe 1 points 10 hours ago

yeah oof i think the problem is too many layers. try starting with a meme format that just says directly what you mean to say (dont make tme tap the sign comes to mind), and adding irony and layers of humor should really only come when the audience is familiar with all sides of the material more

[-] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz -1 points 8 hours ago

So you're saying drag should make dozens of repetitive shitposts reiterating the same point until the 196 audience is familiar enough with the issue to understand more complex humour on the topic. Okey dokey, sounds like fun!
