For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Silvestre (1981), a Portuguese fairy tale about a girl who disguises herself as a male knight to seek her missing father, who disappeared after a violent visit to their home by a duplicitous drifter who left with his hand severed. Apparently there’s some magic and dragons in this somewhere, too. I guess we’ll find out. The entire film has an impressionistic, painting-like aesthetic, which looks cool. The director is renowned auteur Joao Cesar Monteiro; this is considered one of his best works. This will be the first Portuguese movie we have watched on Hextube.

After that is Christmas in Connecticut (1945), a screwball rom-com starring Barbara Stanwyck as a newspaper columnist who writes about her idyllic married life on a farm, which would be all well and good, except that she is actually a single, childless, city mouse. A war hero arranges with her publisher to live on her farm for a couple of days, and so she moves to a real farm to pretend she actually does live the lifestyle about which she writes. Hilarity ensues. And maybe romance? Who knows. Just a comfy li’l classic Christmas movie. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of director Peter Godfrey.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:
