Self Improvement
A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.
While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.
This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.
Rules and guidelines:
- Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.
- Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.
- Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.
- Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.
- Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
@moonlake@hexbear.net started how not to diet and like 1/4 way through already making notes on it like how I need to up my fiber and try cooking without oil
getting proper amounts of fiber is a game changer for real. Just trying to hit high numbers without supplements practically forces you to eat more whole foods!
I try to eat as much avocado as I can afford it's the most delicious high fiber ingredient that goes with almost everything.
kids these days spending all their money on avocado smdh head
Avocado sounds lovely rn tho I'm mostly going for stuff like more oatmeal since I got it on hand. Seems to help me out but like first day so gotta keep it up
hell yeah i eat oatmeal almost daily it's really great for your heart!
ever try it savory?
I just made a savory pot the other day, honestly using it as a new grain/carb came to mind once when I was out of every other carb while back. I've used it more as a last resort but honestly with how good it is I think/finding out how good for my health it is think it might be my first choice going forward.
have you tried the steel cut/irish style oats? serious gourmet shit and worth the long cooking times.
Miso paste is really good in oatmeal too and you only need a tiny amount so it lasts forever.
I have a bit of steel cut but I've always been daunted by how to cook them tbh also fr on the miso paste I mostly used it for miso pasta but I can see about giving it a try with the savory oatmeal next time I make it.
i put the oats in with a ton of water and set a 20 minute timer. Add in frozen veggies and fish sauce and whatever and then restart the timer for another 20m adding more water if necessary. it's just barely rolling and no lid so the water can escape. After the 40 minutes i just let it go until it's the consistency of risotto (0-10 minutes) and it's fucking h e a v e n.
Usually enough for 3/4 servings and so healthy yet doesn't taste like healthy food!
