Self Improvement
A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.
While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.
This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.
Rules and guidelines:
- Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.
- Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.
- Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.
- Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.
- Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
My year is going well so far, despite the world burning down around us. Getting involved in different things. Meeting new people and enjoying myself even though I'm really busy.
I already started reading again and watching cool films this weekend. My hope is to keep this going next week too!
Happy and having a good time. Hope all of you comrades are well too!
Hell yeah, what books/movies are we talking about?
Typical Hexbear answer but I'm just reading Lenin. I first encountered Lenin when I was an idealistic anarcho-kiddo and didn't appreciate his wisdom like I can now. Half way through Imperialism now, then State and Revolution is up next.
And I started Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy. Watched Blue and White so far, tonight will finish up with Red. Absolutely beautiful films! White had a nice, maybe unintentional, critique of Poland's experience of post-USSR shock therapy when you contrast it to Kieslowski's Communist-era Decalogue.
Reading theory and watching kino, that's awesome!
Maybe I should be doing that instead of modding Skyrim smh
Thanks, Comrade! I was doing it more often last year but then the year went to shit. I have such a large backlog of films and readings. It's nice to get back into it, although I have to admit it was harder to focus now on the reading but I think I'm just still tired, I'll condition myself into it. I finished both Lenin and the films, though, and they were great!
Skyrim modding is life.
I also have a never-ending backlog of books and movies, I want to chip away at it more this year. I'd like to catch the new Dylan biopic at the cinema next week
Oh, please let us know if it's good! I don't know anything about Dylan so it may be a good starting point for me.
Hope you can make a dent in your backlog this year! The problem is always that it continues to increase at a faster rate than it is reduced, it's like the universe in that way.
I agree about the backlog, it's impossible to finish it, all we can do is slowly chip away at it. Dylan is the GOAT, I recommend listening to a greatest hits collection since he has a lot of bangers spread across many different albums
that sounds very nice you're really getting off to a good start!
