I really don't want to be on the mainstream internet as it exists today anymore. God it's such a time sink especially for someone with unmedicated ADHD, i lose entire days to webnovels/reddit(ugh)/youtube everytime i open one of them. even this post took me an entire day to write because I kept getting distracted. even hexbear sometimes can be bad for this but there's not as much content

how to i reduce browser usage? especially on phone, and maybe phone usage - i'm considering deleting my browser entirely but i'm concerned about whether i need to retain it for signing into things. But maybe this wouldn't be a problem if I delete as many apps as humanly possible and only use my phone for texts and calls

Reddit is also a very tricky one because of just how much information is on it these days (sidenote I actually fucking hate this, destroy reddit and bring back niche forums). I'm wondering if there's a way to handle this with ublock filters s.t. I can view posts individually but not subreddit feeds or the main page.

a more general question is - how do you throw off the shackles of the Algorithm

specifically on phone:

  • consider using Firefox Focus as your main browser, it only lets you use one browser window (no tabs) and doesn't retain your history,
  • configure a time limit for how long you can use the browser each day
  • move the browser app to somewhere harder to find to prevent opening it to scroll out of muscle memory
  • set the phone's display mode to grayscale so that you get less dopamine from the bright colors

what I do for Reddit is never use the main feed — I've got a tab open for each of the few subreddits I actually want to somewhat-actively keep up with, and I just check those 1-2x/day. There's not a high enough post volume on any of them so I don't end up wasting too much time there.

How to throw off the shackles of The Algorithm:

  • disable infinite scroll wherever possible
  • use incognito mode and frequently clear cookies
  • something like AdNauseum (extension which both blocks and clicks on every ad you're served) might help to confuse your advertising profile

Self Improvement

325 readers
3 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
