Is it possible they just don't feel like dealing with and interacting with the hate? The mods are modding a game subreddit they aren't making a space where they should be expected to engage in culture wars. It's depressing having to interact with a ton of hate.
Im bi and I wouldn't want to deal with people engaging in hateful discussions about bisexual erasure on a subreddit that has nothing to do with sexuality or social issues. That isn't the space for it.
Not feeling like dealing with it is just being bigoted out of fear of bigots. It doesn't change anything. Cowardice isn't an excuse.
Are they obligated to deal with hate when what they signed on for was moderating a subreddit about a video game?
Why are you deciding that someone else must take part in your desire to fight about things unrelated to the subject of the subreddit? Why do you feel entitled to their time and their mental energy like that?
Yes, if you sign up to be a mod, you are signing up to moderate. That includes dealing with whatever hate falls into your community.
The fuck is wrong with you? Oh, the poor little moderators have to do what the name of their positions fucking implies they should be doing? How dare we feel entitled to demand those who volunteered to do a job actually do their job?!
If you're too much of a coward to acknowledge or deal with hate or drama when it shows up, then you shouldn't be a fucking mod.
Just keep in mind that "dealing" can also mean "nuke everything off topic".
Im surprised that people don’t get this. If the post has nothing to do with the game and it is a source of problems then shut it down.
Are we forgetting the first post in question was literally a game screenshot?
That doesn’t mean the resulting conversation that was nuked has anything to do with the game.
What’s wrong with me? You’re the one deciding that someone else should moderate and confront hate on a subreddit because you feel entitled to their efforts.
Having consideration for others is the baseline of being a decent person. Why is this a problem for you?
Golly gee, how awful of me to expect someone who volunteered for a position of authority to actually do something their position requires.
This isn't random bystanders catching flack, these are people who SIGNED UP TO DO A JOB. If I volunteered to help at a soup kitchen and then just never showed up, the soup kitchen has a right to be upset with me. They are, in fact, entitled to be upset with me because I made a promise to help. And then I broke that promise.
They did do what their position required they shut down a thread that was filled with hate that had no bearing on the game.
You think they should just have to accept dealing with hate non-stop because you have zero empathy for these people as you have made clear in your posts.
You seem to think subreddits shouldn’t be focused on the subject of the subreddit which is really weird.
It's a screenshot of the game, how does it not have bearing?
Becayse the discussion wasn't about the game. If I post a screen shot of Luigi from Super Mario 64 and the discussion devolves into whether you can murder health insurance executives then the resulting thread isn't appropriate for the Super Mario Bros sub.
And as I have mentioned elsewhere the mods might have just not wanted to deal with it which is theor right on their sub.
Just ban the bigots and look for common patterns so that they can implement an Automod bot to deal with most of the bigots automatically. Why be a mod if you don't want to moderate things?

Why do you think you are entitled to demand that someone confront a flood of hate for free when the subreddit isn'trelated to anything that should draw arguments on gender identity?
Why do you keep acting like banning people is "confronting a flood of hate"? You know there is literally 0 confrontation involved, right?
Shutting down the thread was how they stopped the flood of hate. Bans were likely given out to people acting rudely or were promoting hate or violence.
You know if you are LGBT+ constantly seeing hate directed at other LGBT+ folks is draining?
This thread has nothing to do with the game either.
And mods can axe it if they so choose but as this isn’t a hatefest this likely isnt an issue.
Also, as far as I can tell from the context, they didn't remove the post or punish OP, they only locked the discussion.

The problem is: why do you need to talk about these arguments in a game subreddit ? Or in any other place not dedicated to these arguments ?
No, I would see this the same way. It’s a video game subreddit. They signed on to moderate discussions about the game not social issues.
Why do you feel entitled to the moderator’s time and energy? Why do you think you have a right to force them to confront hate on a subreddit that is about a space exploration video game?
Leadership sets the tone of a community. If the leaders are going to allow hate towards some part of the community, that effect will spread. So why would they allow hate of any type?
Now imagine you were moderating a Spore community. Some pastel-colored planets seem pretty tame compared to the imagery that game allowed.
They most certainly didn’t allow further hate. They killed the thread.
