How close does the TV series follow the books?
Pretty closely. All the main Roci crew characters are the same. Some peripheral characters are sometimes swapped or amalgamated. Or scenes are changed to be more cinematic.
The books are also a slower burn which explains a lot of details better... The show can someones gloss over a lot of stuff.
But the broad plot is the same. And the TV show stops roughly at book 6 while there are a total of 9 books.
So in theory I could start at book 7?
You'd probably be okay and able to follow along but some things will be different or not make sense as they might mention characters who were never in the tv show. Eg Drummer was completely different. And without spoilers there is one giant difference with one of the main characters due to stuff that happened in real life with the actor. Also in the books you get to know the characters' inner thoughts and motivations which might make some decisions in the last 3 books not too clear.
I'd recommend reading them all as they are very good. But yeah you'll probably be fine.
