Is the family sitting on top of a table? Cause if you look where the waiter's legs cut off as well as the door, they're on some kind of raised surface

I think it's supposed to be like (some weeb come help me out here with terminology) that stereotypical paper wall type-beat, and the dining area is raised relative to the ground outside

At some Japanese restaurants, there are raised floors with tatami mats and you're supposed to take your shoes off before stepping on them. It seems like the Americans from this comic haven't done that though. Here's a screenshot from Yokai Watch lol
