The speed limit doesn't matter per se. You're just hanging out on the shoulder (or on the right of the rightmost lane). I regularly cycle along a 110 km/h road (60 mph) (and people speed too), and it's ok if you ignore the noise (I just put on my ANC headphones as I know I'm safe on the shoulder). The only time you might actually mingle with traffic is when overtaking people in a right turn lane at a stoplight/intersection (but you don't really have to).
I do agree that american built environment is insane and needs to be torn down and rebuilt completely from scratch, though.
@balsoft @captain_aggravated I look at how Kyoto is built, I see efficiency. I look at Tokyo, I see super efficiency. Those in charge of developing a new place, really need to think, 500, 1000 years ahead.
Eh, honestly, you don't really need to "see ahead", you just have to prioritize people over cars. If you do, your city can become great in less than a century. Amsterdam was a car-centric hellscape just 50-60 years ago and look at it now.
@balsoft TRANSPORTATION - If you design a city where everything is within walking distance, you don't need a car to school, shopping, doctors, post office, pharmacy, welfare, banks, restaurants, coffee, liquor store, bar, massage, acupuncture, tutoring, gym, hair salon, nail parlor, stationaries, imported food, clothing, dollar store, pet store, shoe fixer, shoe store, watch store, watch fixer, bicycle store, bicycle fixer, music store, antique store, tea store, florist, BBQ... Within 10 minutes
@balsoft Roads, freeway, parking, bus, train, subway, monorail, taxi, shuttles, senior transportation must be designed to last hundreds of years and through population fluctuation and aging. A bedtown, old parts of the city, financial district, industrial, port cities, schools, food markets, tourism, retail, religious, nature, athletic are going to change differently in a few hundred years. A city must be built to accomodate those changes. Inside Tokyo Station, has Basement 5th level platforms.
