MODERATORS
If only the media was well regulated to protect against bad actors turning it into a propaganda machine like this
Well regulated is an oxymoron. You cant give regulators control over the media under threat of them being compromised. Media must always be independent and democratic. Meaning all private media firms must be dismantled and only horizontally governed media collectives can be permitted. Meaning that all participants in a media outlet are equal and decide in qualified majority over their actions. Of course this doesnt mean independent journalists cant be a thing. Just not large, for profit corporations with hierarchies.
What's to stop a horizontally governed media collective from being compromised and corrupted?
Nothing. Same as a hierarchical one. The chance of corrupting a democratically governed group is astronomically worse than a hierarchical one.
So wouldn't it be better to have an independent regulator and a robust set of ethics and rules the media needs to adhere to?
Thats what we supposedly have today. As you can see, that doesnt help either.
Leftist and extreme leftist concepts are mostly shown to work. Things like universal basic income for example. Horizontal organizations are the same. They already work. It is caputalism that just lies about it.
Regulators over hierarchical media do the same tomorrow that they do today: small numbers of people are easily corruptable and are proven to be able to censor information critical to governments or their own beliefs and flaws.
You just have to look at independent media today. Look at 404 for example. There is no need to censor them because its their professional ethics and horizontal system that gives them credibility. Sites like allsides are much more helpful in that case.
Imagine a world where every media company was structured like 404 and the rest was independent journalists on their own. An outlet like foxnews would no longer be governed by profit interested monorities. Of course most journalists on there have conservative ideology. Still, they would be bound to work in democracy which means that a majority would have to sign off on lies if they were to be published. That is a significant hurdle and also is unlikely to happen because they would be easily disprovable due to the significantly smaller size without the billions in assets.
