She had some sort of chronic illness, seemingly did for a while. And diabetes isn't that rare for people who have a liver transplant(which she did last year).

i believe its a type 1, which is less common than type 2. type1 has much more serious consequences, because you cant produce insulin, so you need a machine to monitor constantly, and a pump for specific insulin and different intervals.

Either type is known to cause an increase in mortality rates for transplant patients, especially if it is not discovered early. And it can occur in up to 30% of liver-transplants, depending on their previous risk factors.
