The beta for groups will release later this week, which won't be federated initially. Federation will be added afterwards.

Looks like it will have some interesting features like videos, polls, and events, as well as moderator tools like limiting what a user can do.

A menu in Pixelfed titled 'Limit Interactions' which shows that a moderator can prevent specific users from posting, commenting, or liking posts and comments.

Will the groups also federate with Firefish and Friendica? (Friendica has had a group function for a long time).

Friendica yes as those are compatible with Lemmy, at least they used to... haven't seen a Friendica post here in a while though ๐Ÿค”

@poVoq @Blaze @caos ๐Ÿ‘‹ Yoo-hoo, here's a Friendica post. Federation with Lemmy works great from here.

I'm not sure, are those compatible with Lemmy?

@Blaze @caos The federation between Firefish and Lemmy is problematic. According to a #Firefish admin, this is because Firefish requires "Authorised Fetch", which #Lemmy has not implemented correctly. Here from Friendica it works fine.

Lemmy does not implement AF but AF is not a requirement on Firefish (admins can choose to enable or disable it, unlike say GoToSocial which forces it on)

That said, this is still a massive flaw in Lemmy and not having AF enabled on the non-Lemmy side makes defederation essentially useless (which is bad considering the kinds of places that have already set up shop on those parts of fedi), so I personally don't think the trade off of "federating with Lemmy" is worth it.
