This is a great article, and it sucks because I think Ncuti Gatwa's first series was solid and I think the second was building to great finale... But the finale just didn't work at all.
Despite what's been said I think Disney already decided not to renew the deal. They probably said, "if you can reach some unobtainable goal, sure, but it's a one in a million and we've seen the finale."
I can only guess that the finale was supposed to setup series 3, and with the big pause coming Gatwa wanted out in order to pursue other projects and the show runner just quickly shoved all the plans for series 3 into one episode. The rest of the series was so well planned it's just so surprising to see such a rushed ending.
