Israel just carried out a widespread bombing of Iran, which has killed a number of senior officials inside Iran (though it seems the leadership is more-or-less intact) as well as a number of civilians. Important facilities have been targeted, but the amount of damage is unknown so far (note that many important Iranian facilities are deep underground, making them both hard to damage but also hard to determine if they are damaged from just satellite imagery, so reports of damage will be he-said-she-said).
It appears the attack took Iran by surprise, given that a residential block was targeted that contained some senior officials - if one saw an attack coming, one would imagine they'd be in bunkers. Nonetheless, like the rest of the Resistance Axis, I suspect that Iran has adapted their military structures to be resistant to decapitation strikes by ensuring that replacement figures are ready to take the place of killed officials.
Iran has delivered a massive missile barrage in response to Israeli aggression, even though Israel is continuing to bomb Iran. Iran is now aware of the location of many important Israeli sites, including secret nuclear sites, due to their recent intelligence haul, giving them a distinct edge.

Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Are those iranian hypersonic missiles?
They're ballistic missiles, some might have maneuverable re-entry vehicles (MaRV) capable of some maneuvering and even a short glide in the terminal phase, but still ballistic missiles. Iran doesn't have operational hypersonic glide vehicles or cruise missiles, the Fattah-2 is their prototype in that regard.
Iran and Yemen sometimes call MaRV equipped ballistic missiles hypersonic weapons though, which can be confusing.
Interesting, I thought Iran had a limited yet real stock of operational hypersonic missiles and they were being used to strike "israel", but now that you tell me this I know better. I ask this because that "terminal phase" on the missiles is absolutely insane, maybe it's normal but to me, someone who is definitely not well versed in modern tech, screams "hypersonic missile".
Why the gliding part though? Is it because gliders have a much smaller "signal" and can't be detected and intercepted as easily?

MaRV equipped ballistic missiles aren't generally considered hypersonic weapons, by that definition the US invented hypersonic weapons in the 1980s with the Pershing-II ballistic missile. So it's technology that has existed for 40+ years. Hypersonic weapons generally refer to vehicles that can fly at hypersonic speeds (Mach 5+) while spending the majority of time in the earth's atmosphere, to avoid midcourse interception systems.
Performing a pull-up or pull out maneuver followed by a short glide phase can really screw with terminal phase anti ballistic missile defences.

afaik ballistic means it's taking a high trajectory, in this case out of the atmosphere, and striking the target after reentry. It follows a ballistic trajectory. A hypersonic glide missile wouldn't follow the ballistic trajectory, instead it just goes straight for the target at low altitude. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.
