Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
Prigozhin finally completed the prophecy of being the modern day Trotsky. First as tragedy, then as farce.
Just like Trotsky, Prigozhin will gain a short lived cult-like status for his brilliant military achievements, who has an unusual talent of whipping aimless youths and prisoners into fanatical shock troops, but an ultimately difficult personality who will pose a lot of trouble to the State. Useful during war time, but dangerous in peace time.
Trotsky - after the failed coup of November 7, 1927 was expelled to Kazakhstan, and ultimately killed in Coyoacán, Mexico City on August 21, 1940.
Prigozhin - after the failed coup of June 23, 2023 was expelled to Belarus, and ultimately killed in Kuzhenkino, Tver oblast on August 23, 2023.
Let’s not forget that this is not the first time the Russian (Soviet) state has disposed of someone dangerous after they have served their purpose. Nor will it be the last.
Sometimes there are 8 weeks where 1.3 decades happen.
They both had it comin'
There’s absolutely no way this guy gets taught about in history classes 100 years from now. Maybe it’s the liberal idea of an end of history talking but Trotsky was a much more influential figure than pigfuck. The special operation in ukraine, entirely insignificant in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t even the largest war in Russia during the 21st century, that would be the Chechen war.
Like as Americans we are constantly exposed to information about this war but there’s other conflicts in the world that are arguably more important. The only reason the news pays attention to it is because it’s white people. Honestly if I ever saw a Ukrainian refugee I would show them combat footage clips of dead Ukrainian soldiers and say “is this your brother?” The Ukrainian identity doesn’t exist, it was created as a reaction towards the collapse of the ussr and their language is a dialect of Russian. Like I don’t support Putin either, he’s not a communist, but like fuck I hate Ukraine a lot more than I hate Russia. Russia I basically mildly dislike for abandoning communism, ukraine is literally ran by nazis.
This is why I emphasized that Trotsky was a tragedy, while Prigozhin is a farce.
Both Stalin and Trotsky were genuine revolutionary ideologues, while Putin and Prigozhin believed in nothing.
However, the parallel in their historical images is too good to be ignored. I didn’t come up with this btw, some Russian communists already called this since last year, and it’s amazing how close the prediction came true - from their cult-like status from the military campaign, the ongoing feud with the state, to the coup, the exile, and finally their assassinations by the state.
Too early to call, my friend. Too early. So far this conflict has radically reconfigured the global geopolitical landscape, from the rise of BRICS and the fall of EU, to the accelerated effort of dedollarization and demilitarization of NATO.
It could very well end up as the most significant event of the 21st century that sparks the end of Western imperialism.
Nonetheless, the empire still stands strong, and will use every means at its disposal to strike back.
