One of my favorite bits of gaming history is how much Japan apparently loved those old Western RPGs. The first JRPGs from the likes of Square and Falcom took obvious inspiration from them + D&D, and there were even Japan-exclusive Wizardry games made after the series ended in the West.
Falcom supposedly got sued for ripping off the Ultima III manual to make character artwork for Xanadu, their biggest hit at that point.
100%! I knew that D&D was influential on gaming from things like Baldur's Gate, but I didn't realize just how much of an influence it had not just in the US but in Japan as well. The divide between CRPG and JRPG was very narrow back then.
