I can't believe people still use Twitter.

[-] mienshao@lemmy.world 31 points 3 weeks ago

I think this every single time I see news about that website. Like what the fuck is possibly on there that justifies using that piece of shit platform? Insanity.

[-] Objection@lemmy.ml 10 points 3 weeks ago

This sketch was about Facebook but it's also relevant to Twitter

[-] TheFogan@programming.dev 7 points 3 weeks ago

Actually more relevant now, considering the ending

"Go to the site where Nazi's scream at you". It's talking about moving from facebook to twitter.

[-] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

Well the punchline to that sketch is "instead of FB, just do what I do: Go to the site where nazis scream at you!" just might be that twitter reference you said was missing.

[-] ter_maxima@jlai.lu 9 points 3 weeks ago

Non-fediverse social media is designed to be addictive because that's how the people running it make money.

People use it for the same reason they use Truth Social.

[-] CluckN@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Unfortunately I think people don’t care how the sausage is made. It has porn and ~~racist~~ edgy memes so they’ll keep coming back.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

half of the users are probably porn OF accounts, i wonder if any of them actually divested from x. we know meta doesnt allow porn of any kind.

[-] mal3oon@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Tech news. Fast tech news. It's well centralized. Unfortunately nothing comes close (not reddit, nor HN, nor lemmy).

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 0 points 3 weeks ago

People. Lots of people. Including Doctor Cory Doctorow and Molly White.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

We were talking about Xitter, not Mastodon...

and we are talking about reasons why people are still there - those two aren't one, because you can read their posts somewhere else too. Except if you meant that people are still there because those two are still there.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

You're missing the point. Ask yourself why those people are still there.

[-] tankfox@midwest.social 2 points 3 weeks ago

Hey, mastodon isn't that bad! When bluesky runs out of funny money and has to enshittify it'll be the one left standing!

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 2 points 3 weeks ago

Once again, not talking about Mastodon

It seems that multiple people don't get what you are trying to say, and i would really like to know. if you have the time, could you elaborate?

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I honestly don't know how to be more clear. It's called a social graph. The most important thing about a social network, above everything else (for normies), is having lots of users. Cory and Molly both know and understand that if they left Xitter, they would lose access to a substantial amount of their audience, so they both stay, despite being some of the platform's harshest critics and the biggest supporters of it's alternatives. That's the answer to the question "why would anyone use it?". The social graph.

but the only way to break through this is to change the platform. Since both of them already keep their posts equal on both sites, it makes switching easier for everyone; removing their content from Xitter would be an incentive for others to switch.

The ideal way would be to try and band together a large amount of "regular posters" and completely switch on an agreed date together; that would have a pull effect for others to do the same.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 weeks ago

I wasn't trying to make any sort of argument why they should be doing that, only why they are.

[-] 9488fcea02a9@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 weeks ago

I dont really care that the average person still uses twitter... What's INFURIATING is that gov't agencies are still using that shit. Why are important pieces of information still being shared on twitter??

[-] don@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 weeks ago

The Secretary of Defense coordinated military operations on Signal, accidentally included a reporter to the group chat (who later spilled the tea on the whole thing), and in that chat claimed they were "clean" on their opsec.

That's what republicans do. They're dumber than a bag of wet bags.

[-] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

they would never do such a thing. not after calling out hillary clinton for using private email servers.

[-] al_Kaholic@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Not just signal, a home brew spy version from a foreign government.

[-] wetsoggybread@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

My friend works for a local town that has a presence on fb, twitter, and inatgarm. The main reason he says they haven't moved to platforms like blsky is because as a government entity they are required to be able to archive all online communications for situations like a Right-to-know request but run into the issue that these small platforms aren't supported by the archiving software so they can't move away completely until then. Fun fact: 1st amendment prevents the government pages from removing or hiding comments you leave on their posta

[-] howrar@lemmy.ca 0 points 3 weeks ago

Would that stop them from duplicating the information on other platforms?

[-] wetsoggybread@lemmy.world 0 points 3 weeks ago

It does if it can't be archived, any official posts must be available for a right to know request so they could post on Facebook or twitter but other sites that don't have a way to archive or a third party to archive they can't make official posts

[-] howrar@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 weeks ago

But my question is, does it not count as being archived if it's exactly the same message that's posted to another platform that is archived?

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Don't be surprised that fascists use the fascist megaphone.

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

I keep getting arguments from peoplee about this, even on Bluesky.

Apparently it's too much to expect people to inconvenience themselves and not follow their favorite musicians or whatever.

If the vast majority of people can't be assed to take the absolutely easiest step possible to fight (or avoid supporting) fascists/Nazis, then we really are fucked.

Same thing with how people could very, very easily choose just NOT to buy another Nazicar. Yet 90% if Americans still bought one last month as a year earlier. It's just about the smallest sacrifice I can think of - just buying a DIFFERENT car that you might not like quite as much.

And I think the fact that we are where we are right now also confirms the problem.

[-] DJDarren@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 weeks ago

Perhaps it's because I'm old, but I kinda hit a wall a few years back where I stopped giving a shit about what famous people had to say on the internet. So on that basis, the move from Twitter to Mastodon was easy for me. Less easy was leaving behind people who I liked, but life is change, and we leave people behind all the time.

[-] SupraMario@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yea I really don't understand this, like move it's 2 seconds to join bluesky...like damn

[-] tamman2000@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Time or technical challenge are not the issue. The issue is that the utility of a social network is a function of the number of individuals in that network.

That's why Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit all still have dominant positions in their regimes. If you want to see what your friends are saying you need to be on the same network they are on. And if they are on Twitter, signing up for Bluesky doesn't magically get you their content. I'm off twitter, never really used insta, I have my FB account, but I only log in now when I need to check on specific things (like seeing if people were OK after the wildfires swept through the town I used to live in), and I guiltily admit I still use reddit, largely because a lot of the niche subs I frequent aren't here. I know the solution to that last problem is for someone like me to step up and make them, but... I'm tired boss. I can either be a volunteer firefighter, or I can admin a firefighter com on Lemmy. I can't do both.

[-] SupraMario@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Naa I get it, I think I'm more annoyed at how the big guys (bands/nfl teams/companies/ect.) haven't moved. Because if they do, they're going to drag a ton of people with them and it'll kickoff the migration.

2 foreign parties have interest in keeping it up. MSB and putin.

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

We can all go entire books at this point with the things we can't believe...

This timeline is fucking insane, and twice as depressing as anything I thought I'd ever live through.

[-] Lanusensei87@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

People just don't want to quit because the alternatives aren't populated enough.... Which is caused by people not leaving. Twitter is to many a necessity for their business, just like many softwares provided by scum companies.

[-] acosmichippo@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

bluesky is populated "enough".

[-] Lanusensei87@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Not if you want to make a living of it. People that do commissions tell me this. It's just what it is.
