Ironically: the Free and Open Source Software ecosystem is the one place communism has repeatedly worked with minimal issues.
Turns out that "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" is super easy when the means of production and end product are open to everyone and cost nothing (other than effort) to create and nearly nothing to distribute.
... that and the consequences of failures or delays in a project are a little different when comparing software to basic human needs.
Not to be the party pooper but "to each according to his needs" part is really broken in the FOSS ecosystem. Sure there are some popular projects that get funding but there are so many critical projects that are being maintained by people as a hobby...
It's because participating in FOSS is completely voluntary whereas participating in an economic system is not
