Are they constantly imagining that they are talking to UNREASONABLE individuals?

I do not come from the US, but in somewhat lefty or centrist spaces I can't see this style.

For just a moment I was like, "I don't do that!" but then I realized I sometimes do. It's way of adding emphasis in text that doesn't support markdown.
