This only applies if you assume people are minimizing the amount of calories they spend, but for people trying to maintain a level of physical activity, switching to an e-bike would mean adding some other exercise to compensate, and it comes out worse.
micro-optimizations like this are a distraction from the killing of oil executives we should be doing.
e-bikes are heavier and faster therefore better at killing oil execs which further lowers their carbon footprint

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
I'm gonna argue the % of people who compensate their e-bike trips with other means of exercise consciously is somewhere in the second point after the comma
Maybe so, but in that case this advice turns into “reduce your carbon footprint by cutting out exercise and becoming more sedentary” which I don’t think is a good strategy.
If we were doing that, we could outlaw treadmills, since they emit infinite CO2 per mile.
Every e-bike I've seen has an adjustable assist level, including no assist. Actually the one time rode an e-bike I wanted to get a workout in, so I put good effort in on the minimum assist level. I got a great workout in and ended up with a really long range for the battery size.
Variable assist is so good, I can get a decent workout but I can also cheese out on a shitty hill
as a child i used to dream of such a thing. i loved riding my bike but grew up in hill country. i even tried to fix an old moped until i realized how shit and heavy they were
if someone sent an ebike back in time to little me i'd have rock hard legs and ass today
It's not too late!
