I mean he's just kind of a name that you hear, if you never learn about the legend I think it would be easy to just assume he was at the Alamo or something.
plus he often gets brought up alongside the more fantastical stuff attributed to Davy Crockett, who was a real guy

if we corrupted yeshua into "jesus" and all the stories about him are dubious at best but he was still a real guy then i'm probably willing to believe somebody with a glandular disorder cut down a tree one time who had a name that slant-rhymes with bunyan in an old-timey accent.
Paul is originally a semitic name (Middle East) and Boonyaan is the Arabic word for buildings....Paul Bunyan was maybe an Arab Jewish person?
