There was a Star Trek episode, I think on DS9 or maybe Voyager, where people were kept alive and healthy with nanomachines and forced to live on a prison colony indefinitely, I thought it was a cruel punishment but I feel it might be adequate for some people now.
Oh yeah, that's the episode of DS9 with Johnathan Banks (aka Mike from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul) playing one of the aliens!
