There was no reason Wash had to die. He was better than those gorram Reavers.
Wash dying raised the stakes for the final show down. Everyone was suddenly mortal and was no longer protected by "main character armor".
That's actually a great answer. Thank you! Yeah I know it's been over a week but this is often how I function.
I'm glad the show ended though. Whedon would absolutely fuck the shit out of that in subsequent seasons.
i haven't watched a finale (that i knew going-in was the last episode) since seinfeld in 1998.
I always stop before a finale, or if the show got canceled I might skip the last season
