Semi-serious answer: Trump's brain is 1s and 0s, "winners" and "losers." This is how he categorizes everything in the world, all his experiences. Mamdani is a winner. Simple as.

I guess we'll find out soon enough if "last person he talked to completely changes his mind" beats liking winners. I really hope not, because Trump continuing to be mesmerized by Mamdani would be extremely fucking funny and honestly probably materially good. Like, fuck it, if Zohran can shut down ICE raids in NYC by hanging out with Trump and pretending to not despise him for a day/weekend/whatever it takes, sure why not i-cant

I mean Obama was incredibly popular after his 2008 win and Trump tweeted shit about him every day for 8 years

Donald had just read The Game (audiobook version) and was negging Obama in order to get the hangout.

It's guess that even for Trump there's probably a fine balance between:

  • wanting to be seen as a 'winner' by associating yourself to 'winners'; and
  • disdain for critics that tarnish your personal image, since that would make you be seen as a 'loser'.

And I'd pretty sure Obama making a joke about Trump hijacked the later in Trump's mind.

Being more realistic through, is that this winners/losers is really an observable tendency in Trumps' decision making process, however the fact is that it's obviously not a binary decision and there's nuance to It, since the human mind is usually not 'rational', not immutable, and also not necessarily consistent, in its decision making process, over time.
