Tankies are people who supported the use of tanks to attack the civilian protests against the USSR in Hungary and later Czechoslovakia. That became the default term for anyone who supports brutal authoritarian states that suppress the people to assert their control. In modern day context a tankie would be someone who blames Ukraine for being invaded and denies the genocide of the Uyghurs.
Some rightwing/centrists like to use it to insult any leftist. You can just ignore those ones.

I include in that list the instance run by a transphobe (sh.itjust.works) where they have a comm run by a bunch of "social democrats" and freely discuss all the 'degenerate roaches', which they can't wait to be free from.
I don't support ukraine, I don't support russia, I oppose the war entirely and want people (yes even you) to no longer get sent to the front to die in an inter-capitalist conflict.

Local language education was definitely not suppressed and cultural group of occupied nations weren't prosecuted! You could make movies in your language and vote to have education be primarily in your own language, right? You could even vote leave the USSR since it wasn't an occupation!
