Damn... The frozen croissants at supermarkets here costs €4 for a pack of 4. A single ready-to-eat would probably be €5

I'm not sure whether they can make a profit on them. You pay more if you buy them as bake-off, frozen or as a roll of dough. They usually have a lot of other baked goods available, most is more expensive. They are made in a factory and then shipped frozen, so only the preparation is done in the store. I consider it a great side-effect of mass-consumption. If you buy them at a coffee shop you pay at least €2 while they're of (almost) equal quality.
