It's funny you should mention that, cause they are indeed quick to turn on their own when their own suffer the consequences of their votes, for example jeering at white people whose Latino spouse (who also supports Trump) gets deported, or being cold towards Trump voting women who are saying that not getting an abortion is literally going to kill them.

Slavoj Žižek (prior to him completely falling off) said something rather insightful about this idealized form of love in "The Pervert's Guide to Cinema":

All too often, when we love somebody, we don't accept him or her as what the person effectively is. We accept him or her insofar as this person fits the co-ordinates of our fantasy. We misidentify, wrongly identify him or her, which is why, when we discover that we were wrong, love can quickly turn into violence. There is nothing more dangerous, more lethal for the loved person than to be loved, as it were, for not what he or she is, but for fitting the ideal. In this case, love is always mortifying love.

The family in this worldview is an extension and reflection of the self, a mere tool for reproduction where the self expands at the expense of all others. Any family that does not reproduce (or does not adequately replicate the self) is devalued.

Reactionaries understand it as a war of all against all, and liberals understand it as a sacrosanct practice of personal freedom/choice.
