They were both proxy wars. But what were they fighting for? In the cold war, usa wanted vietnam to remain a colony to extract profits, but ussr wanted an ally in the region instead. nowadays usa want ukraine to become a vassal state to destabilize its geopolitical adversaries in the region, specifically russia, much like israel is used against many middle eastern nations. russia has no virtuous intention other than self preservation, and they are not a superpower anymore, so they used the tools they had which was a military operation to disarm ukraine and nato.
The USA, along with the rest of NATO, wants Ukraine to remain independent, and not fall into Russian hands.
Remember, the US is just one nation providing military aid to Ukraine. Even Australia and New Zealand are contributing.

Even "CIA Base pretending to be a country" is contributing. They literally disappeared a PM for not being thankful enough for pine gap.
That must be why they did that coup, because of how much they value Ukraine's independence
The entire west is using Ukraine as a battering ram to damage geopolitical enemies, while harvesting it for rare Earths and resources, saddling it with debt and disrupting peace talks. The west has no virtuous intent here.

Yes the Soviets and Chinese of the time very much wanted Vietnam to be free of colonialism just like in Korea.

I mean it's not a hypothetical. They won. So you can see what they did after they won. The fact that they wanted a vietnam free of colonialism is testified by the fact that they freed vietnam from colonialism.
It's the material reality. The fact Vietnam was fighting a common enemy clearly helped but the core of support was the same as the reason they supported African liberation, to bring an end to colonialism. I think bringing an end to imperialism and colonialism is an unambiguous good. "Virtue" is nonsense anyway might as well talk about sins or ontological good and evil. The material outcomes is all that matters.
