Borders are a social contract, they're as real as any other human construct. Let me know if you're still struggling with this and need me to use smaller words.

It's essentially a (very rough) social contract between one national ruling class and another, though. The only real experience ordinary people have with them is being stopped at customs or deported. Basically, it's interesting that's it's the one capitalist/mercantilist/feudal rule you support.
