Watching 6,7,8,9 was cementing them as the bleeding edge quality in game experiences. It is what became expected of them. Then dot com bust. Squenix. Split of the Guch and Uematsu from the clonglamo. Then of course diminishing returns in tech. Lost Oddesy, Blue Dragon, Last Story was their attempt at keeping the flame alive. After that Advent Children was where we saw what FF could be in full CGI film. Now we have Advent Children quality being rendered in real time.

The leap from poly lego blocks to pixelated expressive more realistic 3D from 7 to 8 was crazy given the limitations of the tech. I think time and the tech hamoered 8's ambition with story telling.

I can't get over how quickly Square upped their CGI game. Just compare the cutscenes from FFVII to FFVIII

All the human characters look like action figures with visible joints and painted on eyes and mouths

spoiler(they still made sure to animate Tifa's boob jiggle though)
, then in VIII they look like recognisably human beings.

The middle row is Parasite Eve 1 and 2 so they're relevant to the conversation too. PE1 was released in between FFVII and FFVIII and uses the same realistically proportioned style FFVIII went for and its cutscene character models feel like a midpoint between FFVII and FFVIII

I guess I was confused because those aren't Square titles.
