I got the impression that the word wasn't widely known among the general population of Japan. I only heard about it through straight men coming into online Japanese language gay kink communities.
That wouldn't surprise me, it might be more well known in the West as a loanword than in Japan lol
Or maybe you just weren't in the right communities to hear it, it's not like most people are talking openly about their porn consumption habits in any country
