I don't see how this could possibly take a year to fix. Or even 6 months to allow a 1%. Did these idiots hardcode the tax rate into the machines? Did they not bother to allow that rate to change ever?

Presumably it would need to be implemented as a float, in which case you'd think a stopgap would be to make the rate 0.01% instead of 0%.

Absolutely wild if it's hard-coded. A lot of Japanese electronics are domestically sourced, so it could make sense given they'd be designed exclusively for Japan. Still seems unlikely.

As the article mentions, it might just all be smoke and mirrors, as a tactic to delay the tax holiday.
