I don't even know how to begin emulating the entire Shin Megami Tensei collection. I don't even know what platforms Persona 1 & 2 were on. Idk how old you are, but I feel like younger people were widely introduced to the game through the P3&4 gold ports. P3&4 were some of the biggest games on the PS Vita, and were almost more successful as remasters.

Japan is honestly fucking creepy. Like pre ww2, they were imperialist as fuck and literally getting military training from the US because they saw what happened in the Philippines and wanted a piece. Then after the nukes got dropped, America pretty much rebuilt the nation in its image. Glad Shinzo Abe got killed.

I did actually start with Persona 4 Golden, then fell deep into a rabbithole, so I played a lot of Megaten games.

Persona 1 was released on the PS1 and then re-released on the PSP. The remake features a different soundtrack to the original, more similar to the style from 3 or 4. However, the original soundtrack is extremely good (by Hidehiko Aoki, who passed away in 2002 unfortunately) -> imo the best way to play it is the PSP version with the original soundtrack patch.

Persona 2 has both PS1 and PSP versions. It is also divided into two parts, even though unfortunately few people play the sequel. The PSP versions are upgrades, but Innocent Sin's gameplay balance has kinda been ruined and the game is very easy. Eternal Punishment's port fixes all gameplay problems and is a worthy successor.

As for other games of the series I'd recommend: Shin Megami Tensei 1 (PS1 version), SMT 2, SMT 3 Nocturne (best played after 1 and 2, since it plays with expectations from that one), Strange Journey (there's an original or remake version - either is fine, but each has their fans and haters), Devil Survivor 1.

And a few I'd recommend with a but: SMT 4 + sequel (great gameplay but mid writing), Megami Tensei 2 (great game, but it's very old and janky), Shin Megami Tensei if... (good if you really like SMT 1 or 2's gameplay - it's light on story and is primarily a dungeon crawler. It's technically a persona prequel, since the canonically female MC shows up in Persona 1 and 2 as a surprisingly relevant character)

Yeah psp persona 1 just endless loops a track with lyrics in the dungeons and its mind numbing. I didn't know there was a music patch. I'll have to check that out

This is the quality of music in the original soundtrack.

Also a quality translator is currently working on the PS1 version, but they're the kind of person to give few updates and just release once it's done.

P1 & 2 IS/EP were originally released on PSX and later ported on PSP. P1 got a wonky localization that transposed the setting to murica and cut the Snow Queen quest, an entire B route, from the game; the PSP version is faithful to the original with the exception of an horrid new OST that tries to mimic the pop style of 3 and 4. Innocent Sin didn't get translated until the PSP version; probably because it features Hitler as an antagonist. Eternal Punishment, direct sequel to IS, got its PSX version translated, but not the PSP one (there's a fan translation though)...

I recommend you the PSP versions:

Infamously also turned one of the characters black. Which one? Oh, the guy who wants to be a graffiti artist and thus has frequent run ins with the local cops.

The Snow Queen Quest is also interesting, for it's basically the basis to the new!Persona formula.
