My pet theory has been that derailments actually have not become more frequent, we just never heard about them before.

You can look up U.S. data yourself from the FRA's website. Graph of accidents per 1M train-miles

For each year between Jan 1 and Jun 30, this many derailment incidents were reported in the U.S.:
