It serms incredible to me to give over a billion dollars to a random person.

I mean the very fact that they are spending money on the lottery tells me that chances are they have bad spending habits.

And please, you, yes you, the person that buys lottery tickets and feels the need to explain to me how it's ok, we get it you're built different and aren't addicted or whatever, but there are still so many better things you could be spending it on.

"voluntary tax on the poor"

[-] callouscomic@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You sound like a recent Econ grad wielding little fun facts you learned to throw in peoples faces. Unnecessarily judgmental. People waste money on all kinds of things every day. It's not a problem if it isn't being done to inappropriate levels.

Hurr durr tax on the poor.

[-] WhiteHawk@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Spending money on something that is less likey to return a profit than it is to get hit by lightning isn't exactly an indicator of financial literacy, tbf.

[-] wombatula@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

No but see he made personal attacks, which proves their point...somehow.

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

But an insignificant amount of money for an insignificant change of being rich isn't a big deal either.

How much return do you get for a Starbucks? Some things are just for enjoyment and people enjoy the existence of that chance, however slim.

Not me personally, but I totally get it.

[-] WhiteHawk@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

The problem is if you spend an insignificant amount of money every day the total amount doesn't stay insignificant for long.

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Absolutely, but that's a very different point to the one I was responding to. The only point I was making is that plenty of people responsibly waste money on things every day, for some people it's the lottery, for others it's Starbucks.

Buying a lottery ticket doesn't instantly mean you're bad with money.

[-] wombatula@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Let me guess, you buy lottery tickets?

This happens every time the lottery is discussed lol.

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Nope

I just understand that the world is mainly shades of grey instead of the black and white version most people here seem to see.

[-] wombatula@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago

Sure bud I totally believe you, thats why you are arguing with everyone that the lottery is good and great and smart.

I literally said in my post I knew people like you were gonna come argue about it, and I couldn't care less. No matter how responsible you are, it's a waste of money, idgaf if you don't believe it. Have a nice day go do something else.

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Where exactly did I argue that the lottery was good or great or smart...?

I 100% do believe it's a waste of money. That's why I don't do it myself. You seem to have assumed an awful lot just because I don't view everyone that plays the lottery as a stupid person.

Gambling is a horrible industry and it destroys lives, the world would be better without the lottery existing. I believe both of those things too, but it doesn't make everyone who has ever gambled a moron who can't manage their money.

[-] wombatula@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago

Please show me where I said "everyone who has ever gambled a moron who can’t manage their money."

I clearly said "the average" do you not understand how language works? Why would you argue in favour of it, and why do you literally lie about what I said?

I am not wasting any more time with you, you are clearing acting in bad faith.

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You didn't, and I didn't say you did either...

Heres the one point I was making (not even to you, but you've jumped in on half the comments I made interestingly):

But an insignificant amount of money for an insignificant change of being rich isn't a big deal either.

How much return do you get for a Starbucks? Some things are just for enjoyment and people enjoy the existence of that chance, however slim.

Not me personally, but I totally get it.

You say I don't know how language works, but also that I've argued in favour of the lottery. Show me where.

Who is it that's really lying? The only lie I can see is you claiming I've lied. By all means provide a quote I've said which is an example of me acting in bad faith or outright lying about something though.

I'm more than happy leaving it alone but equally happy to continue the discussion, you're totally free to stop replying whenever you like :) x

[-] wombatula@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago

What the fuck are you talking about? You said that I said "everyone who has ever gambled a moron who can’t manage their money" and I didn't, you can see the context, you lied that's not a debate. I didn't say those words, or other words you put in my mouth, you can't find me saying them because I didn't say them, the proof is right in front of you.

That is acting in bad faith, that is the lie, I have no idea how you cannot understand this or why you would think this is a debate. You claimed I said words I didn't, that in itself is an act of bad faith arguing, are you literally this dense or are just so dedicated to the debate you've abandoned all sense. The quote I provide is literally both of our last posts lmao, if you have the mental capability go look them up.

I am done with you, blocked.

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Where though? I literally never said you said that.

You don't need to block me, I only reply to replies :) x

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Why is that relevant to people who responsibly play the lottery?

[-] Socsa@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

The lottery is literally a regressive tax both in concept and practice and I'm not really sure how you can view it any other way.

[-] wombatula@lemm.ee -1 points 1 year ago

Ok but you sound like an asshole trying to belittle someone for the most basic facts. I love how you talk down and try and frame me as a youth, guessing you're either pretty young yourself or need to stop with pathetic ageism personal attacks instead of debating the subject.

Also I guarantee you buy lottery tickets and are mad at the second paragraph, stay mad salty kid, spend your retirement fund on little pieces of paper.

[-] callouscomic@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I love how you talk down and try and frame me as a youth, guessing you’re either pretty young yourself

You chastise me for implying you are young, and then immediately call me young.

You then attack the use of ageism and proceed to do it to me after.

Wow what inconsistent stupidity.

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

I'm sure there are 100 things you spend money on that we could say the same for.

Jesus, people act like it's impossible to play the lottery without ruining your life.

[-] phillaholic@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

It's possible to do hard drugs and not ruin your life too, but I wouldn't suggest it.

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

But you can appreciate that some do it without ruining their life right?

It doesn't make them good by any means. But people have done drugs and had good lives afterwards, just like playing the lottery.

[-] Socsa@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 year ago

You can stop any time and prove them wrong

[-] Globulart@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

I don't play the lottery at all.

I just don't also think that everyone who does is financially irresponsible.
