He can vow all he likes, but 1. he's a lying sack of shit and 2. he's never getting anywhere near the White House again, so who cares what he says?

Man, I wish I shared your optimism. The next election is going to come down to a few thousand votes in a handful of states, thanks to our backward electoral system.

backward electoral system

Gerrymandering, disinformation, election fraud, voter intimidation by big guys with their big tough guns at the polling stations. Oh, and the arbitrary under-staffing/removal of said polling stations. Lack of ranked-choice, etc.

Sorry, going off the cuff, but I guess your choice of words covers all that. Man I'm ~~proud~~ embarrassed to be an American

I was referring mainly to the Electoral College, but yeah, all those other things definitely apply as well.

Gerrymandering won't help elect Trump in 2024.

The rest could, but they are mainly a threat in fully Republican-controlled states. But Trump cannot win the election unless he wins states where Democrats retain control, eg Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Arizona.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

He pretty much can't win. No way in hell he's gaining supporters, he can only lose them. Only way he wins is if half the country stays home.

I don't have any reported statistics to back up my claims but I am fairly confident that 2020 saw an unprecedented turnout specifically because people were able to bolster their friends and family to go vote against Trump. Notably not for Biden. If I'm right then it's not so much Trump getting more votes but Biden getting less that's the worry

I'm thinking Dem turnout is going to be a lot lower this year just because of the general feeling of apathy around so many people of voting age. They won't want to get peer pressured again by their friends and family. God knows the 4-5 people I convinced to go in 2020 have made it clear that they dont care for Biden and won't want to vote for his second term.

I think if the Dems throw up a younger, more relatable candidate you'd be right on the money. But you know.. Something something snatching defeat from the Jaws of victory

Arguably being the front running for the Republican party is pretty damn close to the white house.

Will the Supreme Court not be stuck between a rock and a hard place once those charges fall? The latest was a felony plea, meaning the charges aren't getting lesser. A felony for trying to steal the election would have to have the Supreme Court saying he cannot hold office again or they are illegitimate as they no longer are abiding by the constitution.

The Supreme Court will save their own necks and leave the republican party with Desantis stuck as their front runner. Either they start applying a lot of makup to his previous actions or I assume this election has to go to the Democrats on a land slide. "Moderate Republicans" may dislike democrats but they would have to vote for someone agaisnt minoroties, advocating for violence against our neighboring countries and trying to fuck over large businesses. That last one they can't live with.
