Part of what makes fall color so breathtaking is its evanescence. There's something beautiful about the last few bright leaves on dark branches against the snow, too.
Here in Los Angeles there's very few types of trees that turn bright colors; mostly just liquidambar and crape myrtle. And with our hot Santa Ana Winds still coming, and no frost, they often finally turn just in time for Christmas, lol.
