Well, both statements are true (except for being the biggest game of the year because who could predict BG3). It sold really well and tons of people were watching it. It also happened to be a pretty disappointing experience. It was pretty devoid of enjoyable gameplay and did everything it could to waste your time.
Yeah no one could predict BG3 but who really thought this shovelware was gonna be anything other than mid at best, let alone biggest game of the year?
Even as mediocre as Starfield is, that was always going to be the bigger game even putting aside better games that either came out before HogPoopBalls: Legacy (like High Fi Rush or even Atomic Heart) or that we knew would be great before even seeing gameplay footage (basically just Armored Core VI)
