So the San Diego to Seattle high speed line (that's already gotten funding from both BushJr and Obama) is now getting chopped up so Oregon basically isn't involved and it's getting more funding? Will they ever actually put down a rail? I have my doubts.
I doubt San Diego to Seattle will be built any time soon. It is more likely that a smaller system would be built between Vancouver, BC and Eugene, OR. The land in between Eugene and Sacramento is really mountainous and not well populated.
Yeah its a lovely but far off pipe dream. Even the Seattle to Portland high speed line, which is only 200 miles of route and would serve 10s of millions of people, is far off. This grant puts it into the planning phase, but thats it so far.
A thousand mile high speed train that connected Mexico to Canada? Not so likely.
Part of it is going to be the sausage making of defining the problem of connecting the Sea-Tac region to Portland.
What nodes do you connect in the Seattle region? What is going to define being an important enough city to connect between the two urban areas? Do you use this project to also solve commuter rail issues between Portland and its Washington suburbs?
There was a lot of planning that happened in deciding the route of the initial segment, including choosing to build through Central Valley cities for stations rather than just bypassing them.
Maybe Elon could bore through the mountain and put a one lane Tesla track that goes 25mph and carries 4 passengers.
Bold assumption that it'd be so functional
Eugene has surrendered our rail corridor to the freight companies - we've been trying to get them just to agree to stop blaring their horns when they're right next to hotel rooms for more than 10 years now. The clusterfuck that would ensue if we were a terminus would doom the line forever.
It depends on which line. A line connecting Eugene to Vancouver, BC would be incredibly useful and do well to pull traffic from airports and highways.
The problem with going south from Eugene is that there are a lot of better projects out there that HSR money could go to instead. The line won't compete well against flying and there isn't much between to connect.
