Plasm is a noun that can mean plasma, germplasm, or a formative material.

Guess it’s both? (Merriam-Webster)

I think it’s a “being unnecessarily technical/obtuse as a joke” thing: plasma, as in “blood plasma” - thus, tree blood plasma ~= maple syrup
