I was curious, why the West is so empty.

Seems like the whole South West is just the Tibetan Plateau, a widespread mountain range north of the Himalaya: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tibetan_Plateau

And the loop all the way in the West, that seems to be on the outskirts of the Taklamakan Desert: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taklamakan_Desert
