Was it power? I thought Gendo was trying to bring his wife back to life and didnt care about anything else.
True, but it's muddled - if I recall correctly, he takes a lot of weird risks that a loving spouse wouldn't, while saying the expected things.
I dunno about unnecessary, there were big monsters showing up once a week and fucking up The Town
