Does he? I don't think I've ever heard that before. I've heard him describe himself as an environmentalist and a humanist, but never a communist. Though if he has read Marx, it would explain his "anime was a mistake" misquote quite a bit, as he was talking about how "anime" being a thing is very limiting and how the market is just making things that are "anime" basically commodifying the concept of animation itself.
