My understanding is that they are games about dating your high school teacher and curing gayness or something
That's Persona, Shin Megami Tensei is more about killing a god cuz he's got bad vibes and then enslaving him to cast support spells.
I've always heard it as "Persona is a game where you team up with your friends to kill demons. SMT is a game where you team up with demons to kill your friends and dethrone god."
